NINETEEN: Funerals and Assassins
Haaken rode at his brotherâs side. Gjerdrum and Derel trailed them. It was the morning after the day following Eanredsonâs return. He had arranged the funeral quickly, for Victory Day, for whatever symbolic value that might have.
Behind them. Dr. Wachtel rode in a small carriage. He was too fragile for a horse. He would be an important speaker. His honesty was beyond question. His testimony would dispel rumors surrounding the Queenâs passing-though he wouldnât tell the whole truth.
The word had spread quickly. The streets were human rivers flowing northward.
Ragnarson told Haaken, âKeep a sharp watch. This mess is perfect for an assassination.â
âIâm watching.â He glanced around. âSomething we should talk about. Ragnar.â
âOh?â
âHeâs bound for trouble. And he wonât listen.â
âWhat is it?â
âA girl.â
âThat all? Well. The little devil. Ainât fifteen yet.... You remember Inger, Hjarlmaâs daughter, back home? I was about his age when....â
âIf you wonât take it. serious either....â
âWait. Wait. I do. These southerners worry about that crap. Never understood why. She somebodyâs daughter?â
âNo. Her fatherâs one of Ahringâs sergeants. It wouldnât be a political thing. Iâm just thinking weâve got trouble enough already.â
âOkay. Iâll talk to him. Where is he, anyway?â
âWith Valther and his bunch.â
âMaybe Iâll keep him closer.â
âYou keep saying that.â
âI get distracted. Damn, I miss Elana.â He sagged in his saddle, momentarily overwhelmed by past emotions.
They encountered Valther on the road. Ragnarson asked, âYou found anything, Valther?â
âNo. Except that there were three men involved in Nepantheâs disappearance. I found their hostelry. The landlord thought they were guards off a caravan from Throyes.â
âAh. And Throyens look pretty much like desert people.â
âSame stock. But they wouldnât have told the truth, would they?â
âWhy not? Still, even if they were, they were just hired blades. Anything else? Mist?â
âI canât find much. No Nepanthe. No Haroun. No Mocker. Nothing here in Kavelin....â
âTrebilcock,â Valther said.
âIâm getting to it.â
âWhat about him?â
âI located him. He and a man named Dantice are in the Savernake Gap. Apparently following Nepanthe.â
âWhat the hell? I told him to keep his ears open, not to.... Following? You sure?â
âNo.â
âI hope so. This could be a. real break.â
âYou want I should send a squadron after them?â Haaken asked. âIn case they need help?â
âLet them run free. Trebilcock donât attract much attention. They might lead him to the guy running the assassins. But Iâm not doing this right. Valther. Sheâs your sister. What do you think? Should we risk it?â
The spymaster pondered, looked to his wife for support, thought some more. âShe seems safe, doesnât she? If they meant her harm, theyâd have done it already.... I donât know. Using your own sister....â
âYouâve done it before. For smaller stakes.â
âAll right. Let it ride. We have Turran to avenge. And my other brothers. Brock. Luxos. Ridyeh. Okay. But I hope this Trebilock is competent.â
âI think so. Thereâs a man under that weird facade.â
âIâm trusting you. Now, what about Oryon? He going peacefully?â
âYes. Heâs in a hurry to find out whatâs up at High Crag. I donât like him, but heâs okay. He believes in the Guild.
